Required to:

  • Understand drawings
  • Print off drawings
  • Take off Quantities
  • Generate product lists on excel/hand
  • Calculate blank sizes and quantities
  • Calculate material usage
  • Request subcontractor quotations
  • Draft written quotation based on a template
  • All quotes to be checked and approves prior to sending
  • Review quotations generated
  • General office duties

On the job training to be provided to detail the step by step process for each activity.

The estimator is to report to the estimating manager


Job Role

Key accountabilities

  • Follow estimating process
  • Calculate manufacturing cots
  • Discuss projects with customer
  • Ask for support when required
  • Follow and absorb instruction and guidance
  • Understanding drawings (understanding the difference between a plan, elevation, section and manufacturing drawings. Be able to use all 4 to generate and understanding of what is required. Be able to read between lines and formulate what needs to be manufactured. Pull out the relevant details provided from drawings and draw a sketch of what is required)
  • Understand the difference between materials. Aluminium, Stainless Steel, Mild Steel, Galvanized Steel. Understand the importance of ensuring the correct material and grade is identified and quoted. This may require some time spent in the factory.
  • Understand the manufacturing process. Know the machines and what they are capable of and what limitations they have. Gain understanding of the time taken for each activity so obvious errors can be identified. This may require some time spent in the factory. Depending on level of experience this may also require hands on factory hands on knowledge.
  • Quantifying the number and shape of components required. Create a list to allow for pricing.
  • Calculate material usage. By hand and using nesting software.
  • Collect all the information required for the quote: client drawings, sketches of items to be manufactured, breakdown of components size and quantity, material of each component (inc grade/gauge)
  • Complete the costing spreadsheet for review using the collected information.
  • Generate a sensible description to include within quotation. Draft quotations. Use standard quotation text.
  • Undertake general office duties. Answer the phone, filing, attending meetings required.


Indicators of effectiveness

  • Estimating manager to monitor that the correct steps are followed in the correct order.
  • Discuss process and how well people are following it.
  • Consistent quality output.
  • Possible improvement identified.
  • Being able to complete activities once issued. This is to monitored by the estimating manager.
  • Provide free hand sketches of what the customer required for review prior to moving into the next stage.
  • The correct material is to be selected. This is to be reviewed by the estimating manager during regular discussions.
  • Depending on the experience the estimator may be required to spend some time in the factory. The estimator manager is to review level of experience and agree what level of experience is required.
  • To be reviewed by the estimating manager
  • Estimator to demonstrate material usage calculation sheets. Each calculation is to be recorded to allow the review.
  • All collated information to be organized so that each element can be reviewed and discussed,
  • Estimating manager to review prior to sending quotation. Follow review process.
  • To be reviewed and approved by estimating manager.
  • General observation by estimating manager.

  • English GCSE min grade C/Grade 5
  • Math GCSE min grade B/Grade 6
  • Must be able to read and understand architectural and technical drawings. Will be tested during interview.
  • A working knowledge of Outlook, Excel, Word.
  • A understanding of sheet metal manufacturing would be an advantage but not essential as there would be job training.
  • Good communication skills. The job requires talking to customers and staff. This includes both written and verbal.
  • Must be able to complete simple mathematical problems. Calculate percentage, trigonometry etc.
